Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) Volunteer Opportunities 2023-2024

Please look at the committees described in the volunteer icon below that will serve our school year next year…and sign up! You must sign up each school year even if you want to remain on the same committee. This allows volunteers to have a one-year commitment and try new ways to serve each year.

Please NOTE: ALL volunteers MUST be SafeParish compliant in order to volunteer in the school. If you have questions about SafeParish, please reach out to Laura Nickol in the parish office at lnickol@eastsideregion.org or visit the Archdiocese of Cincinnati’s SafeParish site – https://www.aocsafeenvironment.org.

SMS PTO Mission Effectiveness Committee

St. Mary School’s Mission is “to educate, inspire and energize children with an emphasis on the Catholic faith, academic excellence, a commitment to serve and lead, and the acceptance of others.” The Mission Effectiveness Committee will provide reflection, learning, and growth opportunities for the entire SMS community, better supporting the outward living of our school’s mission.

Committee Members include Rachael Palermo, Kelly Bollinger, Brian Roy, Catherine Basil, Lisa Comello, Jen Moody, and Fr. Jamie Weber.  Together with Principal Jen Reker-Murphy, this group of parents, educators, and professionals will review and provide feedback on changes to school policies and respond to everyday and extraordinary situations (i.e., pandemic response). They will work on behalf of all parents to ensure that our students receive the highest quality education in the most supportive, challenging, and faith-centered environment possible.

The Mission Effectiveness Committee will focus its efforts first on reviewing and editing the Student Handbook and begin the National Blue Ribbon School application process to reaffirm St. Mary School as a US Department of Education School of Excellence.  This committee successfully executed the effort of the National Blue Ribbon School review, with St. Mary School being awarded the National Blue Ribbon in the Fall of 2023.

In 1986, St. Mary School was the first Catholic elementary school in Cincinnati to be cited as an exemplary Blue Ribbon school. We received our second and third designations in 1994 and 2006, and now our fourth in 2023.   This recognition includes requires a rigorous review of student test scores, curriculum strategies, professional development of teachers and administration, available support and enrichment programs, evidence of parent support and involvement, and our place and work within the community, among many other parameters. This application process worked on by the Mission Effectiveness Committee helped to identify areas of strength and weakness in our school and provided us with a blueprint for growth and expansion in the years to come.

The Mission Effectiveness Committee will meet regularly and update the PTO board and the entire parent body. For more information or any questions about this committee, please contact Principal Jen Reker-Murphy at jreker@smshp.com.
